Hokule'a and Maisu - Exploration with Voyaging Canoes by 'Imiloa Astronomy Center of Hawai'i
Description:
The Hokule'a and Maisu - Exploration with Voyaging Canoes dataset follows the history of voyaging canoe use in Hawai'i. In 300 ad ocean voyagers found Hawai'i using voyaging canoes, and eventually settled on the islands. Once the journeys ceased, the knowledge of how to navigate the open oceans was slowly lost. In the 1970's a model of a voyaging canoe, Hokule'a, was built, and with the help of navigation master Pius Mau Piailug of Satawal a trip was made from Hawai'i to Tahiti, using only celestial navigation. Several Hawaiian's learned the practice of celestial navigation, enabling them to complete long journeys using voyaging canoes. As a gift to Piailug for sharing his knowledge, the new Hawaiian celestial navigators gave him his own voyaging canoe named Maisu. "As humanity becomes more aware of global technology, global markets, and global trends, the people of the Pacific are rediscovering ancient navigational practices to help a new generation of leaders voyage confidently forward in to a modern, global society" - from the dataset narration.
